#309 Climbing to Tolbachik volcano.
Duration of the trip: 7 days.
Season: 15 June – 20 September.
Tolbachik volcano lies in the central part of Kamchatka 630 km away from Petropavlovsk – Kamchatsky. The volcano belongs to the Klyuchevskaya group of volcanoes, the largest group of volcanoes in Kamchatka. Ostry and Plosky Tolbachik volcanoes form a large volcanic massif to the south-east of the group. These are two adjacent volcanic centers with individual structure, morphology
and vents. Tolbachik cones are of special interest because of their evaporation and fumarole vents. The climb to Tolbachik through the cinder fields and old lava flows. The summit of the volcano is concaved by 500 - m –deep crater extended for 1.8- km in width. Hiking is not strenuous. One of the days tourists will visit Yuzhny and Severny fracture appeared 
as a result of the 1975 – 76 eruption. The fracture consists of multiple cinder cones, fumarolic vents and sweating. The eruption buried secular larch wood under 15 m thick layer of ash and cinder. Dry remnants create an illusion of the fairy dead wood.
Volcanic activity has impacted the diversity of flora and landscape of this region. Lunar scenery of the region appeared to be the reason why the first soviet Lunakhod 
(lunar surface vehicle) was tested here.
At the end of the trip you will visit the national settlement Esso. This settlement is the capital of kamchatkan “Switzerland”, the region in central Kamchatka protected from winds by mountains, with dry climate and multiple thermal springs. The name “Esso” in native people language stands
for a “Larch”. The settlement, one of the coziest in Kamchatka, lies in the old caldera of the ancient volcano at an altitude of 500 m. It is surrounded by the mountains covered by coniferous and deciduous forests. A tour to the settlement, in addition to its unique nature, will provide insight into the way of life and traditions of the Even people.

Notes:
Tourists should have a backpack, waterproof plastic bag for personal things, sleeping bag, tent, mat, layered clothes, spare footwear, high boots (waders), sunscreen, mosquito repellent, flask, sun glasses, first aid set, personal care items. Overnights in tents while en route.
