#102 Climbing to Avachinsky(2751m) volcano, rafting trip down the Malky Bystraya River, hiking to Mutnovsky(2323m) and Gorely (1829m) volcanoes, visiting Viliuchinskye hot springs.
Duration of the trip: 13 days.
Season: 10 June – 30 September.
The Avachinskaya- Koryakskaya group of volcanoes consists of five volcanoes stretched in chain to the north-west from the town of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. These are Kozelsky (2190 m), Avachinsky (2751 m), Koryaksky (3456 m), Arik (2187 m) and Aag (2310 m) volcanoes. The summit provides an excellent panoramic view to the valley of the Avacha river, Avacha Bay, Mutnovsky, Vilyuchinsky, Gorely volcanoes, towns of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Yelizovo.
The northern slope of the volcano offers a spectacular view to the Nalychevo valley of Dzendzur and Zhupanovsky volcanoes. Koryaksky volcano towers to the left of Avachinsky volcano. Climbing Avachinsky volcano is not strenuous and takes 6 -8 hours.
The Bystraya River originates in central part of the peninsula and flows into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is the second by length river of Kamchatka. Intense thawing of snow in mountains provides high water in June. The width of the river
in the rafting area can reach up to 50 - 150 m with current velocity of 1 - 4 mps. The river runs through the picturesque scenery. The river is home for salmon, wild ducks can be viewed from the boat. You will be able to keep an eye on bears and Steller’s sea-eagles.
Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes lie 80 km to the south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The summit of Mutnovsky volcano is 2323 m high. The caldera floor
is at an altitude of about 1500 m above sea level. Mutnovsky is a complex volcano composed of four cones, that provide one of the most powerful and high-temperature fumarolic fields in the world. Mutnovsky often emits steam and gas clouds with the odor of sulfur gas. The caldera is filled with numerous geothermal vents. These include fumaroles, mud pools and solfataras. The massive shield Gorely volcano is 1829 m high. The summit consists of eleven adjacent craters some of which are filled with lakes. The trip to
the volcanoe is very exciting!
The thermal field consist of several springs of weakly-running water with a temperature of 40-52°C. The springs forms natural healing pools to soak and relax after a hard walk. Tourists will enjoy a 30 m high waterfall in the canyon of the Spokojny brook.
